Rights, not just permission

If you hold an EU, EEA or Swiss passport, no visa is needed to live in Italy. If Italian blood runs in your family, you may reclaim citizenship outright. Two routes, one goal: live in Italy with rights.

Freedom of movement

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens enter freely and stay ninety days. Beyond that, register your residence (iscrizione anagrafica) at the comune and show one qualifying ground: work, study with health cover, or sufficient resources.

Permanent at year five

After five continuous years of registered residence, the right of permanent residence kicks in and strips out the underlying conditions. Family members can register alongside the worker, student or self-funded resident.

Italian blood, Italian passport

Citizenship passes jure sanguinis, by descent rather than birthplace. A recognised claim means an Italian passport, full EU rights, and no immigration paperwork at all. The documentation is heavy and the line must be clean.

After the 2025 reform

The March 2025 decree narrowed new claims, generally to applicants with an Italian parent or grandparent born in Italy. The 1948 female-line cases still proceed before the Court of Rome. We assess the line and the transitional rules.

Find your route

We read the family line, the evidence, and the post-2025 limits, then tell you which track, free movement or recognition, actually fits.
