A status you inherit by love

Non-EU family of an Italian or EU citizen enter a separate, more generous regime under D.lgs 30/2007 (Directive 2004/38/EC), sidestepping the Testo Unico Immigrazione that governs ordinary non-EU residents.

The carta di soggiorno, not a permesso

Instead of a permesso di soggiorno tied to work, study or income, the relative receives a carta di soggiorno per familiare di cittadino UE: valid five years, renewable, with the right to work from day one.

Four categories with automatic entitlement

Spouses and registered partners, descendants under 21, older dependent descendants, and dependent direct ascendants (parents, grandparents). Each qualifies through the relationship itself, not through a quota or job offer.

Markedly lighter than ordinary reunification

No income test on the sponsor, no idoneità alloggiativa housing certificate, and no quota: the route the Testo Unico imposes on others simply does not apply to direct family of an EU citizen.

Permanent after five years

Five continuous years of regular residence with the EU sponsor convert the card into the permanent residence card: a ten-year, almost unconditional title, renewable indefinitely.
