The Elective Residency Visa is Italy's long-stay route for non-EU nationals who make Italy home without any employment. It is the standard path for retirees, trust beneficiaries and those living on investment income.

Passive income, proven

Consulates want recurring non-employment income, generally read as roughly €31,000 a year for the main applicant, with uplifts for dependants. It must be stable, verifiable and documented for at least the prior twelve months.

Four conditions at the consulate

Beyond income you show suitable Italian accommodation, private health insurance covering €30,000, and proof you will not work in Italy. Remote work for a foreign employer sits in a grey area; the Digital Nomad Visa exists for that.

Five stages to the permesso

Eligibility audit, dossier preparation, consulate submission, then within 8 days of arrival the permesso di soggiorno at the Questura, closing with iscrizione anagrafica at the comune to register your residence.

Three to six months
